Hunter x Hunter is a shonen series that takes part in a modern day type world with a few twists. Monsters exist, for example, along with people who are able to unlock and control their own life energy and turn it into special abilities. That life energy is called aura, and the skill set is called nen. There are four basic principles to using it, so to summarize:


1. Ten - Creating a shroud of controlled aura around one's body instead of letting it flow free.
2. Zetsu - Blocking or suppressing the aura in one's body so it can't be detected.
3. Ren - Basically an amped up Ten. It's more for offense and showing off strength.
4. Hatsu - Actually using the aura to form abilities. Should always be unique to each person. (i.e. Killua can make his aura lightning because he was frequently tortured with it to become desensitized to the pain)


Many of the users of this ability become 'Hunters', or someone who has proven themselves after a series of rigorous tests that change in type depending on who is leading them. Killua originally joins the canon by showing up to take the hunter exam simply because he wants to see what the hype is all about. He fails the first time, but ends up becoming friends with Gon, the main character. Despite his family's attempts to convince him otherwise, he enjoys that friendship and follows Gon when the boy comes to free him from his own house. From there, they go on many other adventures together all in hopes of finding Gon's father. Killua simply enjoys spending time with Gon. At one point during these travels, he takes the hunter exam again and knocks everyone out on the first round, passing alone.

Killua starts with no friends in the show, but after breaking free from his family with the desire to make friends, he easily grows close to Gon. From there, he also bonds with Kurapika and Leorio, and even though they separate after the hunter exam, they join again later and become closer even still. They all make a close group that separates and comes together as their goals meet and change, but for the entire series (in my canon point), Killua stays by Gon's side. Aside from all his friends, there's also Killua's family, which is complicated in and of itself. I have a canon link for that summary. Another page to explain them individually and in detail, annnd with the plot.

As Gon's best friend, Killua plays a large part in the plots of the canon and develops with them. He's sort of a foil to Gon. He begins cold and ready to kill, balancing out Gon's optimistic, black and white view on the world. As the seasons pass and they go through the events outlined in the wiki linked above, Killua slowly shifts to a kinder, warm-hearted boy who wants to be there for his friends as Gon shifts in the opposite direction. Aside from that, he also is a large factor in helping Gon get by through the various issues in canon. He's there to help him when he's not strong enough and train alongside him, keep him on track when he's distracted or confused, and pull him back when he's out of control. As the other side characters leave and go about their own business, Killua ends up getting the most of this and it puts a large strain on his emotions that shows in his demeanor as time goes on (other characters even comment on how he looks sad).

So basically, he's tied largely into the story and into the cast, and his character develops by breaking away from the views of his family and finding out who he wants to be. He becomes stronger and learns more about fighting, nen, and the world, and softens, maturing and becoming a great friend and a kind person, even in his strength.

PERSONALITY:

First and foremost, Killua is an assassin. As a member of the Zoldyck family, he was born into the role and conditioned from birth to live this way. It only makes sense that he shows incredible strength and talent from the start, along with an apparent disregard for the lives of others. When his new friends falter at the idea of killing someone, he volunteers easily. He seems to have no trouble ripping a man's heart straight out of his chest. He was raised and trained to be this way. Ruthless, cold and calculating.

He's actually extremely talented for a 12 year old, and many of the last applicants in the hunter exam claim to be watching him for this reason as well. He's a super quick thinker, able to analyze situations and come up with answers in the moment and even before, with little clues to help him along. He shows up even more experienced, adult hunters in his ability to do this. He's been insanely strong since even before he learned nen (he was always able to open his family's super heavy door), and his speed is able to keep up with Gon's who's notably quick. He seems to be good at just about anything, honestly (even having mastered darts at the age of 6 or 7 for some reason), and even when he can't measure up in a situation, he's well versed in how to measure himself against his opponent and decide what the best course of action is from there. More on that later.

But this sort of impression contradicts with the first time we meet him. While he can just as easily be cocky and proud of his talents, he can also be humble, and when complimented he's usually unsure of how to react, seeming flustered and embarrassed as he tries to write it off. He seems just as cheery as Gon, wanting to befriend him simply for his age group and partaking in things like pillow fights and races and managing to spend all of his 200 million jenny (money) on sweets. This is still true: he's a child. He enjoys playing around and having fun. During the last round of the first hunter exam, Killua reveals to Gon that he doesn't want to be an assassin. His wishes clash with his family's, and so despite his upbringing and natural response to violent situations, he wants to just have friends and enjoy himself. That isn't to say he doesn't enjoy fighting, of course. He does. And the challenge is something exciting that he can work towards. He's just not as fond of killing as his family seems to be.

Throughout the course of the series, we see Killua grow and mature into his real self. He starts with an impression from his family and a closed off world he wasn't allowed to break free from, but at the beginning of his appearance in the show, he's running from all that. There's still a base of it to his character-- for example, he'll casually mention how he was tortured throughout his life or how he stabbed his mother in the face and his brother in the side to get away. Certain views are twisted thanks to this upbringing and that sticks with him. He knows how to kill and doesn't have any problems with it if it furthers his goals, but he won't kill someone if it seems unnecessary. That's the difference between himself and his family.

On top of that, Killua really is a kind-hearted person and a great friend. His family largely thinks it's strange that he wants to have friends outside of them, but he enjoys everything about it. The thought of spending time with someone and having fun, doing whatever they want and growing strong together-- his relationship with Gon is everything he ever wanted for the most part, and that shows in how thankful he's seen to be and how he'll suffer for his sake over and over again, without speaking a word on it. At the bottom of it all, Killua is selfless and will do anything for his friends. At least at this point in his life.

He's contradictory of himself in many ways, and that's part of what his whole character development is. At the point I'm taking him from, he's right at the peak of all of this confusion. In his progressive change into kindness and friendship from loneliness and killing, he has become something of a doormat, especially when it comes to Gon. He suffers constantly from Gon's selfishness and doesn't say a word, even appreciating it because he feels needed and wanted for who he is. A great example of this is during the Greed Island arc where he burns his hands up terribly just so he can hold the ball for Gon's powerful punches. He also has a huge weakness in his willpower that's part trained way of thinking, part literal poison in his mind from his older brother Illumi. There's a needle implanted in his brain that forces him to run from a battle if he can't win, and this also reflects the problem he's had in his fighting all along. If an enemy is too strong, he flees without another thought. Illumi wanted this to continue as a way to control and protect him, and though Killua does find it out later and rip it out to free himself from it, currently in this point it's still in him and causing him a lot of stress.

It's hard for him to stay and fight when he feels like he can't do it thanks to the influence of his family and this needle. It's also hard for him to stand up for himself when he's feeling hurt in his friendship because he's grateful to have the friendship at all, and his selflessness goes overboard. Despite having so many talents, Killua is essentially blocked in the road from these two aspects, in terms of his growth. Events happened to line up properly in canon to help him out of these, but in game, he'll have to approach them in a new way to be sure they don't consume him.

POWER:

Nen

He's able to use Nen, which is explained above. Of course, he gets the usual added strength and agility from it. Basically the use of it enhances his whole body. On top of that, there are actually different types of nen users in various categories, and Killua is a transmuter. This means that his best Hatsu attacks would be those that use his aura to mimic something else. Rather quickly, Killua decides on electricity due to how he's completely used to the pain caused by it. It still hurts him, but he's able to deal with it without even flinching.

His current list of Hatsu are as follows:

Lightning palm - Just what it sounds like. He channels his aura into his palm and mimics electricity, shocking his opponent with it.

Thunderbolt - It's pretty much like an extended version of lightning palm. He's able to project his aura from his hand as it mimics electricity, sending a lightning bolt at his opponent. He usually does this after jumping in the air so it comes down like real lightning. He hasn't actually used this yet at this point in canon, but it comes shortly after and as a clear second step of his first ability, I think it's understandable that he's got it in mind. (He likes to keep his attacks hidden.) His last Hatsu, however, hasn't been thought of yet.

Aura and nen are such an obscure thing that he can really come up with any new moves that revolve around moving his aura and making it act like electricity. If the time comes in game, I'll run it by the mods first.


Assassin Knowledge

A big vague category thanks to his unusual upbringing. He's shown to have immense strength even before learning nen, as he is able to open a 16 ton gate with ease. (After nen, he opens the full 64 ton gate.) His speed and reflexes are notable and commented on, as well as his stamina. These are all how he was able to keep up in the first hunter exam, even if he was failed for killing someone in the last match. (It's really unclear as to whether that was Illumi's mind control or not, which is why I didn't mention it above.) He's resistant to eletricity and pain in general, able to withstand it without reacting at all, and poison doesn't affect him at all thanks to extensive training in that. He's also super intelligent in strategy, analysis, and math in general (as I mentioned above) and can keep calm even in tense situations better than a lot of more experienced hunters.

On top of that, he has some assassin arts.

Claws - He can somehow transform his nails into claws that are sharper than a normal blade. These are used as his weapon most of the time, even later on to hide his other abilities.

Shadow Step - His steps are almost completely silent. Even a hunter whose abilities lay in hearing told him that she could barely hear him while they were walking side by side.

Rhythm Echo - He can create 'afterimages' of himself as he walks with shadow step. He usually does this by walking around the opponent in a circle until there are so many of him it's impossible for a normal human to tell which one is real.

The Snake Awakens - It seems to be an extension of the claws technique, as his arms move and wiggle like snakes and cut anything that he touches.

Yo-yos - These aren't really assassin specific but I'm putting it here because their weight was something he picked up from his family's idea of making everything in the butlers' house weigh ridiculous amounts (along with the gate). These metal things weight 50kg each, and he has two, one in each pocket. He's very skilled at them and can calculate where and when to throw them in battle.

[After being introduced to the network just a week ago, Killua completely understood it by now. It was basically like a phone that connected to everyone else's, and with video capability, right? Nifty. It would help a lot in times when he needed information, but it could also connect him to people. For a long while he wasn't really sure what to talk about, but now...

He lifts a hoverboard in front of the camera for everyone's viewing pleasure, grinning smugly behind it as he lowers it once more.]

Check it out! Does anyone else have one of these? [Dropping it to the ground, it barely taps the surface before hovering again and he hops on, one hand controlling the video as the other tucks into a pocket.]

Send me a message and I'll tell you where to meet me for a race. We can even take some bets. [It'll be an easy way to make money.] By the way, are you guys all old or is anyone else around my age? I'm getting bored...

[His eyes drift to the side at that comment, and just when he's about to end the feed, his expression widens in surprise and then falls. Exasperated, he pulls his hand out of his pocket to gesture off screen. The camera wobbles as he presumably gets off his own board.]

What-- seriously?! The new model's out already?!
